INTEGRATION OF GEOGEBRA SOFTWARE INTO TEACHING AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS IN NIGERIAN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

AKANMU, I. A.

ABSTRACT This study examined the effect of the GeoGebra package on the performance and attitude of learners in Mathematics. Lack of instructional resources, especially those involving Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has been a major impediment confronting teaching and learning of Mathematics. Hence, this research on GeoGebra, an ICT Mathematics package for teaching Geometry, Algebra, Statistics and Calculus, is of necessity. A quasi- experimental design was adopted. The study population comprised secondary school students in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State. SS II Mathematics students from two intact classes from each of the two purposively selected schools in the area constituted the sample. Availability of functional computer systems served as basis for selecting the schools. The classes were assigned into experimental and control (two) groups using simple random sampling technique. The result showed that the students taught with GeoGebra performed significantly better at the post-test level than the pre-test level in Student Achievement Test in Mathematics, SATM (t = 2.04; p < 0.05). The result from Mathematics Attitudinal Scale (MAS) also showed that the attitude of the students towards Mathematics was significantly dependent on their knowledge of GeoGebra (t =2.12; p > 0.05).
