PRIMARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS? COMPETENCE ON MATHEMATICAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract This study investigated primary school mathematics teachers ?competence on mathematical skills development for national development in Rivers East senatorial district of Rivers State. Descriptive research design was adopted in carrying out this study. The population of the study was all public primary schools in Rivers East senatorial district. A total of one hundred and ninety nine (199) teachers were used as a sample for the study which comprises ninety seven (97) male and one hundred and two (102) female selected from six primary schools. Four research questions guided the study. The data were analyzed using mean and percentages. A structured questionnaire named Primary school mathematics head teachers and classroom teachers? questionnaire (PSMHCTQ) was the instrument used for data collection, and the instrument was face validated by two experts in mathematics. Reliability coefficient index of 0.89 was obtained using Pearson?s product moment correlation. The result revealed that Primary school teachers lack mathematics background hence they do not possess the pedagogical know-how in mathematics to develop mathematics skills in their students. Based on the result, it was recommended that the government should ensure that more specialist mathematics teachers are employed in the primary schools.
