THE ATTITUDES OF UNIVERSITY LECTURERS TOWARDS THE USE OF COMPUTER-BASED ASSESSMENT IN MATHEMATICS EXAMINATIONS (CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN MATHEMATICS LECTURERS)

Abstract This study investigated the attitudes of university lecturers towards the use of computer-based assessment in Mathematics Examinations. The focus of the study was to determine the lecturers? attitudes, perceptions level of acceptance of computer-based assessment to ascertain the influence of years of teaching experience on their perceptions of computer-based assessment.The study was a descriptive research of survey type. The population for the study comprised of all lecturers in the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria, while the target populations were the lecturers in the department of Science education majorly Mathematics Educators and Mathematics department in faculty of Physical Science, purposive sampling technique was used to select the subjects for the study which comprised of 24 mathematics lecturer and 4 mathematics educators. The validation of the instrument was done and reliability coefficient of 0.74 values was obtained. The research instrument used was the researcher-designed questionnaire which consisted of 20 items with four likert scale. Four research questions were raised and one hypothesis was tested. The statistical instrument used in analyzing the data collected was frequency, percentage for the research questions and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used for testing hypothesis generated.Findings of the study revealed that majority of the Lecturers do not perceive the use of CBT for mathematics courses as relevant, effective and useful, the attitudes of university lecturers towards the use of CBT for Mathematics courses can be classified as negative, the level of acceptance of CBT for Mathematics courses is low among university lecturers, and there was no significant relationship between the lecturers? years of teaching experience and their perception of CBT.From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that the Lecturers do not perceive the use of CBT for mathematics courses as relevant, effective and useful, their attitude towards the use of CBT was low and there was no significant relationship between the lecturers? years of teaching experience and their perception of CBT. Therefore, based on the results of the findings the following recommendations were made among others, that university authority should organized in-house workshop and seminars for the lecturers to sensitize them on the useful, relevant and effectiveness of the CBT for mathematics courses, also lecturers should be encourage to change their attitude towards the use of CBT for examining their mathematics students since their world is moving towards the use of technology.
