TOWARDS MEETING THE MATHEMATICAL NEEDS OF 21ST CENTURY STUDENTS: A REQUISITE FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Abstract Progress in mathematics education, leads to the advancement of science and technology. The 21st century age is described as an age of information and communication technology engineered by scientific and technological advancement. Preparing students for the demands of the 21st century is critical and demands more innovations in the teaching and learning of mathematics. This study presented a model for the 21st century mathematical needs of students. These needs as proposed include mathematical teaching and learning needs, mathematical skills for the 21st century as well as the mathematical tools for transfer in the 21st century. It was recommended among others that parents and the government should show sufficient concern for the teaching of mathematics at all levels of education and encourage children to learn mathematics which should be supported through the provision of adequate and necessary mathematics laboratories, equipment and materials.
