Abstract This study investigated the effect of Mathematics language proficiency on students? achievement in Mathematics. The study was carried out in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised all upper Basic Education II (JS II) students in the area of study. The sample for the study was made up of 367 JS II students. The study adopted quasi-Experimental Design of non-equivalent experimental and control groups. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. Mean and standard deviation descriptive statistics were used to answer the research questions. The hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using ANCOVA statistic. The results revealed that the acquisition of mathematics language proficiency was effective for improving students? achievement in Mathematics. In considering urban and rural JS II students the result equally indicates that both urban and rural students? achievement in Mathematics was dependent on students? mathematics language proficiency. The authors therefore recommended that mathematics teachers should always engage students to understand mathematical terms, concepts, symbols and syntax for improved understanding and achievement Key words: Mathematics, Language, Proficiency and Achievement
