EFFECTS OFGENDER INEQUALITY ON THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT This study examined the effect of gender inequality on the teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools. A population of 100 students which comprises 50 males and 50 females and a total of 50 teachers comprising 25 males and 25 females were involved in this study. A comparative research design was used and two hypotheses were generated and the data used for the study was gathered using well-structured questionnaires. One for the students and the other for the teachers, each with 10 items and the 4-point likert scale was used for the rating. The T-test statistic was used for testing the hypotheses. Results revealed that male mathematics teachers are preferable in the teaching and learning process compared to their female counterparts and male students have positive attitude to the learning of mathematics. Recommendations were made to both teachers and the government in order to improve the nation?s academic standard.
