INFLUENCE OF MENTORING ACTIVITIES ON SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY AND MATHEMATICS INEKITI STATE NIGERIA BY

ABSTRACT This study investigated the influence of mentoring activities on the performance of Biology and mathematics students. The study is descriptive in design. The population of the study was made up of senior secondary school students in Ekiti State Nigeria. The sample consisted of 180 Biology and Mathematics students selected from six secondary schools. The sampling techniques used were random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. The instrument used in the study was a questionnaire titled ?Mentoring in Biology and Mathematics? (MBM). The instrument was validated by experts in Science Education, Mathematics and Test and Measurement. Reliability of instrument was ascertained using test-retest method. Reliability coefficient of 0.72 was obtained. Data collected were analyzed using Pearson?s Moment Correlation. Hypothesis formulated was tested at 0.05 level of significance. It was concluded from the study that Biology and Mathematics teachers can influence performance in their students by incorporating mentoring activities into their teaching methods. Based on the findings of the study, recommendations were made. Among which was that mentoring activities should be employed by Biology and mathematics teachers to supplement the normal classroom teaching to improve performance in students, and help bring up the slow students to improved level of performance.
