Abstract Mathematics education is a tool for scientific, economic, political and human development of all nations. The knowledge of Mathematics helps an individual to cut, cost, save time, maximise profit and adjust his expenditure to his income. Any nation that lacks adequate mathematical knowledge will definitely remain underdeveloped, because mathematics has been identified as the bedrock for national development. This paper therefore, examined Mathematics education as a tool for human development, challenges and prospects. The paper revealed that the challenges facing the teaching and learning of mathematics in Nigeria is a re-occurring decimal that cuts across students achievement in mathematics generally and that it has affected Nigeria economy on the long run. The study among other things suggested that Government at all levels should create an enabling environment for human development programmes by establishing skill acquisition centres across institutions of learning for individuals to acquire training to be self-reliant, self employed and create jobs for others.
