MATHEMATICS EDUCATION: A PANACEA FOR UNEMPLOYMENT, POVERTY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN NIGERIA

Abstract Insecurity and poverty become one of the major problems in Nigeria, where several illegal armed groups, ethnic militia groups, religious fundamentalist are generally created as a result of unemployment and poverty. Therefore, this paper focused on mathematics education as a functional education which can be used as a panacea for unemployment, and poverty eradication for achieving desired change in Nigeria. It also argues that the high rate of unemployment and poverty in the country is directly responsible for the increasing security challenges in Nigeria. The paper suggested that, more emphasis is needed on functional mathematics education in the country. This will enable citizens to acquire appropriate skills, capacities, values, knowledge and attitudes which can be used in the transformation of individuals and help them to be self-employed and not to continue to look for white-collar jobs.
