EFFECTS OF COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTIONAL PACKAGE ON SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS? RETENTION IN LATITUDES AND LONGITUDES IN ABUJA, NIGERIA

Abstract This study investigated the effects of Computer Assisted Instructional (CAI) Package on Senior Secondary School Students? retention in latitudes and longitudes in Abuja. The research design adopted was quasi-experimental research design. The sampling technique was multi stage sampling techniques. One hundred and seventy eight (178) SS2 students comprising 90 male and 88 female students served as sample size. The research instrument was Mathematics Retention Test (MRT). The reliability of the test instrument was determined using split half method. The correlation coefficients of the half tests were calculated using the Pearson product moment correlation analysis formular. This was used to compute the reliability coefficient usually denoted by? r?_2^1. In order to obtain the reliability of the full length of the original items, Spearman Brown formular was used. A correlation coefficient of 0.86 obtained was considered high and suitable for gathering data. The instrument was certified to have face and content validity by experts. Descriptive statistics such as Mean and Standard deviation were used to answer research questions, while t-test was used to answer hypotheses at 0.05 significant levels. The findings of the analyses revealed that students taught latitudes and longitudes using Computer Assisted Instructional (CAI) package, retained more than those taught latitudes and longitudes using the conventional method of teaching respectively. This study recommended that the use of CAI package enhances retention of students in Mathematics; therefore, teachers should be discouraged on the use of conventional method of teaching latitudes and longitudes in mathematics but rather to embrace teaching latitudes and longitudes in mathematics using Computer Assisted Instructional (CAI) package or teaching aids.
