TEACHERS PERCEPTIONS OF THE USE OF BridgeIT MOBILE APPLICATION FOR TEACHING MATHEMATICS AT BASIC SCHOOLS IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract The National Examinations Council (NECO) reported pupils? low performance in Mathematics at the National Common Entrance Examinations between 2010 and 2015. In response to this report, the Lagos State Government introduced the use of mobile application for teaching mathematics. This study, therefore, investigated the perceptions of teachers on use of BridgeIT mobile application for teaching mathematics at basic school level. The objectives of this study were to: investigate the (i) perceptions of basic school teachers towards the Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEU), Intention to Use (IU) and Attitude to the Use (AU) of BridgeIT mobile application for teaching mathematics; and (ii) relationship existing among basic school teachers? PU, PEU, IU and AU BridgeIT mobile application for teaching mathematics. The study was a descriptive type of the survey method. A simple random sampling technique was used to select 262 from 524 mathematics teachers from the 131 BridgeIT schools. The instrument used was Teachers? questionnaire with four sections. Reliability index of 0.79 for the instrument was obtained using Cronbach alpha. The study revealed that (i) basic school teachers had positive perceptions towards the PU (71%), PEU (85.7%), IU (87.5%), and AU (90%) BridgeIT mobile application for teaching mathematics; and (ii) significant relationship exists between PEU and IU (r = 0.596, p < 0.01), PEU and AU (r = 0.588, p < 0.01), PU and AU (r = 0.418, p < 0.01), PU and PEU (r = 0.386, p < 0.01) and PU and IU (r = 0.525, p < 0.01) on BridgeIT mobile application for teaching mathematics. The study concluded that teachers had positive perceptions on use of BridgeIT mobile application for teaching mathematics. Therefore, the study recommended that basic school mathematics teachers should be encouraged to use BridgeIT mobile application for teaching mathematics.
