Abstract This study determined the effect of Jigsaw as an instructional strategy on mathematics achievement of secondary school students. Two purposes, two research questions and two hypotheses were used in carrying out this research work.Quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design was adopted for the study and intact classes of 87 SS2 students were assigned to either Jigsaw instructional strategy or control group. Data were collected from a sample of 87 students comprising 43 males and 44 females from two randomly selected schools in Gwagwalada Area council of the Federal Capital Territory.. The schools were grouped into experimental and control groups. Jigsaw instructional strategy was used for the experimental group while the control group was taught using the conventional method.40 multiple choice items instrument called Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) developed by the researchers with a reliability coefficient of 0.83 using Kuder-Richardson formula 20 was used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation for answering the research questions and t-test at coefficient alpha level of 0.05 for testing the hypotheses. The result showed that there is a significant difference between the mean achievement of students taught with Jigsaw instructional strategy and those taught with conventional method. Also there was no significant difference in the achievement of male and female students with in Jigsaw. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that teachers should use the Jigsaw instructional strategy in teaching mathematics and that seminars, workshops and conferences should be organized to train teachers on the use of the strategy and mathematics laboratory should be designed in such way that it will allow the students to work in groups. Key words: Jigsaw instructional strategy, Conventional method of teaching, Mathematics achievement test.
