Abstract In a quest to rejuvenate the spirit of self-reliance as encapsulated in our educational policy, the study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of elaboration strategy on self-reliance of senior secondary two students in geometry in Langtang North, Plateau State, Nigeria. A quasi experimental design which involved control group pretest posttest was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 1387 SS2 students; comprising of 757 male and 630 female students from 22 private schools in the study area. Useni Memorial College Dadur was selected using purposive sampling technique from the 22 schools, and a sample of 100 SS2 students participated in the study. Three research questions guided the study and three hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. An instrument titled: Self-Reliance Test in Geometry(STG) was used to collect data for the study. The treatment lasted for three weeks. Data collected were analysed using mean, standard deviation and ANCOVA through Statistical Packages for Social Sciences(SPSS) version 20. Findings of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the self-reliance mean scores of the experimental and control groups in favour of the experimental group. Also, there was no significant difference between the self-reliance mean scores of the male and female participants in geometry in the experimental and control groups. One of the recommendations of the study was that Mathematics teachers should use elaboration strategy in teaching circle geometry to enable students become self-reliant in solving geometric problems.
