INFLUENCE OF QUALIFICATION AND TEACHING EXPERIENCE ON TEACHERS? MASTERY OF NEWLY INTRODUCED CONTENT AREAS IN THE SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM

This study sought to determine influence of qualification and teaching experience on Mathematics teachers? mastery of the newly introduced content areas in the senior secondary school General Mathematics curriculum in Nsukka Education Zone Enugu State. Ex-post-facto research design was adopted for the study. Eighty (80) Mathematics teachers drawn from a population of one hundred and forty-two (142) Mathematics teachers constituted the sample size for the study. Two (2) research questions and two (2) null hypotheses guided the study. Teachers? Mastery Test on Mathematics Contents developed by the researchers was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument consisted of thirty (30) multiple choice questions and fifteen (15) essay questions with internal reliability coefficient of 0.96 and inter-raters? reliability coefficient of 0.70 respectively. The data obtained were analyzed using mean, frequency, standard deviation and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings revealed that there is significant influence of qualification and teaching experience on senior secondary school teachers? mastery on the newly introduced content areas in the General Mathematics curriculum. Based on the findings, it was recommended that retraining programmes should be organized for the teachers, especially senior secondary school teachers. It was equally recommended, among others, that only qualified teachers, with minimum of first degree should be allowed to teach at senior secondary school level.
