ATTITUDE OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS? TOWARDS MATHEMATICS AND TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS IN IKA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF DELTA STATE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude of senior secondary schools mathematics teachers? towards mathematics and teaching of mathematics in Ika South Local Government Area of D. Four research questions and three hypotheses were raised for the study. The design adopted for the study was descriptive survey. The population of the study consisted of all secondary school teachers in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State with a sample of 156 secondary school teacher?s selected using stratified random sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire Attitude towards Mathematics and Mathematics Teaching Scale (QAMMTS). The face and content validity of the instrument used was ascertain by two experts in Mathematics department and the Cronbach?s reliability coefficient of 0.75 was obtained. Mean and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that the attitude of secondary school teachers towards mathematics and mathematics teaching was positive. The study however found the presence of negative attitudes to some items in the confidence subscale. The study therefore recommended among others that intensive in-service training for the secondary school teachers, employment and posting of qualified mathematics teachers to these schools will help secure Nigeria educational system.
