IMPACT OF MATHEMATICAL APPLICATIONS ON AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN KOGI STATE, NIGERIA

This paper examines the impact of mathematical applications on agricultural development in Kogi state, Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted. A purposive subset of the population which included farmer?s co-operative; research institutes, college of agriculture and ministry of agriculture within Kogi state were utilized. The stratified random sampling technique was adopted with 50 members from five strata totaling 250 members for the study. Structured questionnaire with 20 items on four point likert scale was the instrument used for data collection. Data was analyzed using simple descriptive statistic (mean score). The study revealed that basic skills in mathematics enhance agricultural production and practice. Mathematical modeling of agricultural systems will help to spur up stakeholders? interest and action for agriculture. Based on the findings, the following recommendations among others were made. Ministry of agriculture should regularly enlighten farmers through seminar/workshop on basic mathematical applications for improved performance. Mathematical applications in agriculture should be inculcated into school curriculum. Government should fund research works on mathematical modeling of agricultural systems.
