TEACHER?S DISCOURSE PRACTICES IN MULTILINGUAL MATHEMATICS CLASSROOM IN A NIGERIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL

This article explores Discourse practices (DP) as used during Mathematics teaching in a multilingual classroom by presenting an analysis of lessons taught by a teacher from second year Senior Secondary school (SS2) in Nigeria. The language of learning and teaching (LoLT) in Nigeria is English. Students? home languages are used at the teacher?s discretion to supplement the LoLT in instances of further clarification of certain concepts when students need more understanding as well as regulating the students? behaviour. This article identified dominant DP used by the Mathematics teacher and draws implications for making influential decisions about teacher?s DP in the multilingual Mathematics classrooms.
