MATHEMATICS LABORATORY METHOD (MLM) AND TEACHING OF CIRCLE GEOMETRY: IMPLICATION TO STUDENTS? ACHIEVEMENT

Olisama, O. V. (Ph.D), Ojo, E. K. and Bankole, P. A.

The study focused on the effect of Mathematics Laboratory Method (MLM) on the achievement of Students in geometry. It adopted the quasi- experimental design to find the relationship between teaching geometry in classroom using MLM and Conventional Method (CM). The random sampling technique was used to draw 212 (91 male, 121 female) SSS2 students from Four Secondary Schools in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State. The instruments for data collection were FREM, and GAT. The GAT consists of 30 multiple choice questions drawn from circle geometry which yielded a Spearman? rho reliability coefficient of 0.73.The research questions were treated with the aid of bar charts while ANCOVA was used to test the null hypotheses. The findings show that MLM is an effective way of teaching circle geometry in the classroom. It also showed that effect of MLM is higher on male and lower teen (14-16) years students. It was recommended that schools should have model lessons based on MLM for teachers, in the absence of mat-lab. Keywords: Mathematics Laboratory Method (MLM), Achievement.
