BOOSTING BASIC EIGHT EDUCATION STUDENTS? INTEREST IN NUMBER AND NUMERATION USING COOPERATIVE LEARNING STRATEGY WITHIN AN INCLUSIVE MATHEMATICS CLASSROOM IN FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY (FCT) ABUJA, NIGERIA

The determined the effectiveness of cooperative learning strategy in boosting the interest of basic eight education students in Number Numeration.it was conducted at the Abuja Municipal Area Council(AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. The study adopted a quasi-experimental of non-randomized pre-test posttest control group design. The target population was all the 19,134 basic eight education students in AMAC. However, the sample of 113 out of the target population within their intact classes was used. Two instruments ? Dyscalculia Diagnostic Test (DDT) and Number and Numeration Interest Inventory (NNII) were used. They were validated and have reliability indices of 0.75 and 0.70 respectively. Means and standard deviation was used to answer research questions asked while ANCOVA was used to test all the formulated hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. findings among others was that the use of cooperative learning strategy improved basic eight education interest in the Number and Numeration taught during the period of this study. It was therefore, recommended that cooperative learning strategy should be in cooperated into mathematics method lessons of the pre-service mathematics teachers by the primary stakeholders that is the teacher education institutions.
